Foreign students on a scholarship through a scholarship program created with the consent of the Slovak government
Incoming students that are taking part in a scholarship program created with the consent of the Slovak government (list of relevant scholarship programs by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of Slovakia) are insured under public health insurance, unless they are already insured in a EU/EEA/Swiss confederation member state.
Public health insurance is reimbursed by the state and is free for scholarship students.
Foreign scholarship students- regular students and doctoral programme students- are obligated to submit an application for public health insurance to one of the three health insurance companies in Slovakia offering this service:
- Dôvera – can sign up directly in one of their offices
- VšZP (Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa) – through an application in Slovak, through an online application in Slovak, or at one of their offices
- Union –online application in English https://www.union.sk/online-registration-uzp/#/selection-of-insured-person, or at one of their offices
Scholarship students from EU member states utilize a European Health Insurance Card. It is recommended to add commercial health insurance on top of European health insurance.
Students that take part in the National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak government gain public insurance for free.
