Description:
The Laboratory of Bioprocess Engineering conducts research in two main areas:
- engineering aspects of adsorption and chromatographic separation processes of prebiotic oligosaccharides, glycosides of medicinal interests, natural aromas, therapeutic proteins and enzymes of interest,
- biocatalyst and reactor design and optimization of for the biocatalytic and biotransformation production of prebiotic oligosaccharides, glycosides of medicinal interests, natural aromas and chiral lactones of medicinal interests.
Projects and cooperation:
The laboratory has been involved in several national and international projects including the Framework Programs and Eureka projects. The running reasearch projects deal with:
- characterization of equilibrium and kinetic properties of salt-tolerant anion-exchange membranes (cooperation with Sartorius Stedim Biotech) and multimodal particle chromatographic adsorbents;
- development of separation process for the recovery of recombinant human erythropoietin (cooperation with the Institute of Virology of Slovak Academy of Sciences);
- multicomponent separation of fructooligosaccharides in multi-column set-up using the periodic batch and continuous mode;
- separation of 1-phenylethanol and acetophenone from a post-biotransformation mixture;
- whole-cell production of chiral lactones using immobilized enzyme cascades (cooperation with the Institute of Chemistry of Slovak Academy of Sciences);
- production of tyrosol derivatives of fructosides and galactosides cascades (cooperation with the Institute of Chemistry of Slovak Academy of Sciences).
