Description:
It is the department which is engaged in research of the mechanics of particulate materials and hydro - mechanical processes. The research is aimed to studying and design of processes and equipment for characterization, treatment and processing of powder materials and suspensions.
Department consists of several separate laboratories including the special instrumentation.
Laboratory for characterization of powder materials. Laboratory is equipped with the special devices, allowing the characterization of the following properties of granular materials:
- shape and morphology of the particles
- particle size distribution
- absorption properties of powders
- porosity
- rheology of powders
- compressibility
The instrumentation was purchased through EU projects:

Laboratory for processing of powders. It is a laboratory with the instrumentation that is mainly focused on the research of the process and design of technologies for processing of granular materials. The properties of powder materials that have been measured using the instruments for their characterizing are utilized here. On this basis, the research of processes and design of technology for processing powder materials is realized (silos design, briquetting equipment, conveyors, screeners, mixers, mills, extruders, etc.).
The instrumentation allows this research:
- powder grinding (breaker jaws, hammer mill, pin mill, ball mill)
- sieving (vibrating sieve, rotating sieve)
- mixing (homogenizer with a cylindrical chamber and different shapes of blades, cubic chamber with rectilinear movement of the blade)
- roll pressing and briquetting (compactor with the smooth or profiled rolls)
- granulator (low-speed granulator, low-speed granulator with flat matrix and blades)
- extruder for paste extrusion (screw extruder with a bladed rotor of a special design, screw extruder with a rotating head of a special design, radial extruder)
- Jenike shear tester
- ring shear tester
Laboratory of separation processes. It is focused on the research of processes, design of equipment and technology for the separation of the different phases by the physical - mechanical operations.
The instrumentation allows this research:
- hydrocyclone
- aerocyclone
- membrane separation
This working team is oriented towards to:
- applied research of unit operations for a powder processing
- process design of equipment for these operations
- process design of complex technologies
- the design and preparation of drawings for each operation
- project design and preparation of drawings for technology nodes
