What is the Sixth Framework Programme?
The Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) is the principal instrument of European Union for financing of research in Europe. The programme was proposed by the European Commission and adopted by the European Parliament on June 3, 2002. It is open for all public and private entities during four years (2002 - 2006). Total budget of FP6 is 17.5 billion EUR, from which 12 billion is earmarked for 7 thematic priorities.
On Lisbon summit in March 2000 European Union agreed upon creation of internal market for science and technology called European Research Area - ERA. FP6 is financial instrument that should help to create real European Research Area.
Basic principles of FP6:
- to integrate research in selected thematic priorities in which Europe maight manage to achieve high added value
- to crete instruments leading to stronger connection of national, regional and other European activities; will secure high effectiveness of solution of research problems and autonomy of project teams;
- to enable to structure research in such a way which will ensure Europe significant position in development of human resources and international cooperation in science and research
Thus, the objective of FP6 is development of real European scientific community using the best know-how and support of activities of highest scientific and technological qualities by means of international projects.
In particular, FP6 is aimed at universities, research institutes, innovative companies, small and medium-sized enterprises, large corporations, public institutions, students and researchers.
