prof. Ing. Ján Híveš, PhD.
Vice-rector for Science and Research
Ján Híveš (born in 1963) received his university education at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava in the field of Inorganic Production Technology (1986). He continued his studies in an internal postgraduate course at the Department of Inorganic Technology, Faculty of Chemical Technology, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Prague. In 1992.
He was awarded the title of Candidate of Technical Sciences by the Scientific Board of the ICT, Prague. Since 1991, he has been a senior assistant at the STU Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology (STU FCFT). From 1998 to 1999, he worked in the Department of Applied Electrochemistry at the Norwegian Technical University (NTNU) in Trondheim. In 2002, he became an Associate Professor in the field of Inorganic Technology and Materials, and in 2010, he was appointed a Professor in the field of Inorganic Technology and Materials by the President of the Slovak Republic. Throughout his professional career, he works at the STU FCFT Department of Inorganic Technology, currently as the Director of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Technology and Materials. In the years 2004-2011, he worked in the FCFT Academic Senate, and since 2011, he has been a member of STU AS in Bratislava.
Professor trains the students in the subject of Fundamentals of Chemistry within all Bachelor study programmes at STU FCFT, as well as in the Master degree subjects of electrochemical and technological focus in the study programme of Chemical Technologies. He is a long-year supervisor of the Doctoral study programme and the Chair of the Chemical Engineering and Technology Branch Committee.
Híveš belongs to the leading experts in the field of inorganic technologies and materials, technical electrochemistry in particular, including high-temperature processes. He has published more than 300 scientific papers in foreign and domestic journals and in proceedings of scientific conferences in the field of electrochemical properties of electrolytes for aluminium production, preparation of strong iron-based oxidizing agents and their applications in the field of micropollutant disposal in the environment.
His domestic and international recognition of his work is evidenced by more than 500 citations to publications in the above-mentioned fields (H index 14, Web of Science), as well as the invitations to the lecture and work visits to the Norwegian University of Technology in Trondheim, Norway, and the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida , USA. He is a member of the Scientific Boards at the UCT Faculty of Chemical Technology in Prague (since 2014), TU of Ostrava Faculty of Materials Science and Technology in Ostrava (since 2018), SAS Institute of Inorganic Chemistry in Bratislava, STU Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology (since 2011) and STU Bratislava (since 2015).
He has been the principle investigator of several scientific research projects at home and abroad (13 VEGA and 20 applied research projects), and a co-researcher of several APVV projects (4) and foreign projects (1-7RP, 2-NATO). He is a co-author of two utility models and five improvement proposals.
He actively participates in the dissemination of the latest scientific knowledge in the field of engineering electrochemistry in Slovakia. His graduates are demanded and welcome in the multinational chemical manufacturing companies. He is a member of the Slovak Chemical Society (since 1986), the Slovak Electrochemical Association (since 2015), the Slovak Society for Surface Treatment (since 2001, President 2011-2019), the European Federation of Chemical Engineers - Working Party on Electrochemical Engineering (since 2011, SR representative), and the International Society of Electrochemistry (since 1996).
He intensively works in the field of science and research promotion among young people in Slovakia, in 2015, ZSVTS awarded him the prize of "Propagator of Science and Technology", in 2014 the STU Rector granted him the "Professor of the Year 2014" award, and in 2020, he was granted the “Scientist of the Year SR 2019” award in the Innovator of the Year category.
