Prof. Ing. Stefan Stanko, PhD. (1964) is a graduate of the STU Faculty of Civil Engineering (STU SVF, 1986, Automated Control Systems in Civil Engineering). In the period 1988-1994, he was a researcher participating in several research projects, and implemented IT systems within his field. In 1996, he defended his CSc. degree. In 2010, he was habilitated in the field of Water Management. In 2017, he was appointed Professor in the field of Hydraulic Engineering. He is a member of the STU SVF Scientific Board.
He is currently the Head of the Department of Health and Environmental Engineering at the STU Faculty of Civil Engineering. Since 2015, he had been the Vice-Rector for Education, and, until 2016, he also held the position of the Vice-Rector for Foreign Affairs. In the years 2011-2015, he was a member of the STU SVF AS Economic Commission. From 2015 to 2019, he was the Chair of the Council for Education at the Council of Higher Education Institutions of the Slovak Republic (RVŠ SR). Since 2019, he holds the position of the Vice-Chair of the STU Academic Senate and a member of the Bureau of the RVŠ SR. In 2017, he was a member of the working group for the Development of Doctoral Studies at the Slovak Republic Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport.
His research and pedagogy activities are focused on sanitary engineering structures, water management, urban hydrology, systems engineering, mathematical modelling, and software design oriented on drainage of towns and villages. He is a guarantor of subjects within several study programs in all three higher education degrees, and the guarantor of the Bc. English study programme of Civil Engineering. He is a member of the Field Commission 5.1.6. Water Structures, Water Management Engineering study programme.
He is an author and co-author of two monographs, several university textbooks and dozens of domestic and foreign publications. He has supervised eight successful Doctoral students as well as dozens of Bachelor and Master students.
His activity has always been oriented on the implementation and acceleration of ICT systems at the HW and SW levels. While working for the Faculty, he has participated in dozens of application projects, where, besides others, he assessed, designed and implemented water management systems for municipalities and cities, as well as the Slovak Republic highway sections; all with the support of computer technology. He is an author of several software systems.
He has been the principle investigator of APVV projects, several VEGA projects, co-researcher of UVP, as well as the Erasmus + and SAIA projects, and others. He was a member of the Coordination Team of several TEMPUS projects and the NATO Linkage Grant ENVIR LG 950 445 project.
He is the Chair of the Examination Commission for the verification of professional competence of operating the public water supply and public sewerage systems at the Slovak Republic Ministry of the Environment. He is the Chair of TK1 Water pipes and sewer systems at the SR Office of Standards, Metrology and Testing (ÚNMS SR). Since 2021, he has been a member of a working group within the Slovak Republic Concept of Water Policy, and a sector expert within the OPHC Qualifications Verification System in the Slovak Republic. In the period 2007-2012, and again since 2019, he has been a member of the Sector Council within the project of the National System of Occupations of the Slovak Republic, where he has participated in developing work positions within the Operation Program of Employment and Social Inclusion.
Since 2013, it is his third term of performing the role of the Chair of the Slovak National Committee of the International Water Association (IWA). He is an IWA representative of the Slovak Republic with the right to vote. He is also a member of the SR Association of Water Purification Experts (AČE SR), International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), Federation of Professional Engineers (SNK FEANI), as well as an Editorial Board member of Ambiente & Água, an Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science, and others.
He has completed several study stays in Canada, Italy, Denmark and others. He has lectured at several universities in the EU, Central Asia and the Russian Federation (Moscow, Vladimir, Tambov, Ekaterinburg and others), where he also contributed to the implementation of the Bologna Education System. He has also been improving his personal management during foreign internships/mobility overseas and in the EU.
